What is a COVID-19 IgG/IgM Rapid test?
The COVID-19 IgG/IgM Rapid test requires a few drops of blood and is conducted at point-of-care. It detects the presence of IgG and/or IgM antibodies to SARS-CoV2.
Your immune system creates antibodies (complex protein structures) to fight infection. Once you have become exposed to any virus, your body will create different types of immunoglobulins that target that specific virus. These are called IgM (early antibodies, non-specific) and IgG (produced later, and much more specific antibodies).
The COVID-19 IgG/IgM Rapid test detects the presence of your antibodies (IgM and/or IgG) against the COVID-19 virus. It is important to note that your body may not start producing antibodies until several days after initial infection as per the graph below.
IMPORTANT NOTE – The Covid-19 IgG/IgM Rapid Screening Tests are NOT home tests and can only be administered by a registered health professional. More detailed information can be found on the TGA website here https://www.tga.gov.au/legal-supply-covid-19-test-kits.
Under Australian TGA regulations we can only supply testing kits to the following:
ALWAYS READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE: Negative results do not rule out SARS-CoV-2 infection, particularly in those who have been in contact with the virus. Follow-up testing with a molecular diagnostic should be considered to rule out infection in these individuals. Results from antibody testing should not be used as the sole basis to diagnose or exclude SARS-CoV-2 infection or to inform infection status.
Beware of non-TGA approved testing kits. Our COVID-19 IgG/IgM Rapid testing kits are fully TGA approved – ARTG# 334501.
